Can scoliosis follow up by surface topography (Biomod-L®) securely predict Cobb angle progression? Longitudnal study; preliminary results on 60 patients
نویسندگان
چکیده
Background The gold standard parameter for scoliosis follow-up is the Cobb angle from full spine radiographs. However, the repetition of X-rays on children and adolescents may increase future cancer risks [1,2]. Our project is to space out X-rays assessments by using a Moiré based Surface Topography device (Biomod-L). Two reference postures have been selected after a preliminary study: 1) Joined elbows and coiled shoulders (dorsal hump measurement); 2) Erected position, hands grasping wall bars (all other measurements).

Neural-network Detection of Thoracic Curve Severity in Scoliosis
Torso deformity is often the primary complaint of a patient with scoliosis. Non-invasive detection of progression of the underlying scoliosis from torso deformity would reduce the cancer risk associated with spinal X-rays (Levy et al., 1996) and may define the 3-D scoliosis deformity more completely and with greater sensitivity to patient concerns than simply measuring the Cobb angle on a plain...
متن کاملClinical improvement and radiological progression in a girl with early onset scoliosis (EOS) treated conservatively – a case report
BACKGROUND Chêneau-Brace treatment of a certain standard reduces the rate of surgery, prevents progression and in a certain patient population leads to marked improvement of Cobb angle and cosmetic appearance. During the last two years a patient refusing surgery with a double major curvature of initially 60 degrees showed a clear cosmetic improvement and a clear radiological progression at the ...
متن کاملCorrelation between Topographic Parameters Obtained by Back Surface Topography Based on Structured Light and Radiographic Variables in the Assessment of Back Morphology in Young Patients with Idiopathic Scoliosis
STUDY DESIGN Optical cross-sectional study. PURPOSE To study the correlation between asymmetry of the back (measured by means of surface topography) and deformity of the spine (quantified by the Cobb angle). OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE The Cobb angle is considered the gold standard in diagnosis and follow-up of scoliosis but does not correctly characterize the three-dimensional deformity of scol...
متن کاملCan surface topography replace radiography in the management of patients with scoliosis?
Orthopedic Rehabilitation Services, Gesundheitsforum Nahetal, Alzeyer Str. 23 D-55457 Gensingen, Germany Abstract Introduction Scoliosis is a three-dimensional deformity of the spine and trunk, which during adolescence, can be effectively treated conservatively. Scoliosis patients are exposed to multiple Xray investigations during treatment. One can reduce the need for X-rays during the regular...
متن کاملSignificance of peak height velocity as a predictive factor for curve progression in patients with idiopathic scoliosis
BACKGROUND Much attention has been paid to peak height velocity (PHV) as a possible predictor of curve progression in patients with idiopathic scoliosis (IS). The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between the magnitude of the Cobb angle at PHV and scoliosis progression, defined as having surgery prior to skeletal maturity in female patients with IS. METHODS A retrospective rev...
